Robot Rules: Regulating Artificial Intelligence

We were delighted to welcome back Jacob Turner (OH 2007) barrister and author.

Jacob presented our audience with the challenge that is Artificial Intelligence and the Law: in the first book of its kind, Jacob is a leading author in this field, tackling the question of how the legal system should respond to the new and very complex ethical and moral issues raised by this new technology.

Noting that we have the means and tools with which to agree international answers to the questions raised, Jacob shared with us his views on self regulation by tech companies as opposed to the need for governments to take the lead and shape AI regulation.

Pupils asked equally challenging questions in return and were inspired by Jacob to become leading experts in their own fields.

Jacob’s book – ‘Robot Rules: Regulating Artificial Intelligence (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018)’ is flying off our library shelves as our pupils, who are simultaneously engaged in extended reading for their Aske Projects (Year 12) and Dawson Projects (Year 9) consider the problems of rights, responsibilities and ethics raised by AI.
