Year 9 computing students explored careers in technology through hands on learning and a competition with an exciting trip to Girls in IT Day, a national event hosted by Cisco Systems Inc.
The event, held across multiple locations in England, Ireland and Wales, brought together students from a range of schools to explore careers in technology.
The day began with an engaging guest speaker, who shared fascinating insights into the latest developments in artificial intelligence.
Students then took part in a series of small-group activities, including a guided tour of Cisco’s impressive offices. A highlight of the visit was the opportunity to speak directly with employees, who shared their personal career journeys and offered practical advice about working in the technology sector. These conversations provided students with a clear and relatable view of the diverse pathways available within the industry.
The event culminated in a dynamic “Dragons’ Den” style challenge, where students were grouped with peers from other schools to design an innovative AI application
addressing a modern-day problem. Each team presented their ideas to a panel of Cisco “Dragons”, demonstrating creativity, teamwork and confidence.
We are delighted to celebrate the success of our students in this competition. Riya (9A) Aaliyah (9 Aesc) and Hannah (9 A) achieved an impressive second place, while Laila (9 Ansuz), Chloe (9 Alpha) and Alison (9 A) secured first place with their outstanding “Tailored” app design.
It was a fantastic experience, providing students with invaluable exposure to the world of work, not only developing their understanding of technology, but
also encouraging them to consider future careers in the field.
