We are delighted to share the outstanding success of our first joint Year 12 team, who travelled to New York to compete in the M3 MathWorks International Mathematical Modelling Competition, one of the most prestigious student maths challenges in the world.
After being selected as one of just nine finalist teams worldwide, from over 770 international entries, the team achieved an exceptional result, finishing second place in the Technical Computing category. This achievement earned them $2,000 in scholarship funding, in addition to the $1,000 they had already been awarded for receiving an Honourable Mention for their original project.
The team comprising of, Anika (12 JYB/SGK), Arav (L6H1), Aarav (L6H3), Sofia (12 JZC/JVM) and Aarav (L6H3), impressed judges with their ability to tackle a complex real world problem through advanced mathematical modelling, coding and technical analysis.
Their journey began in February with an intense 14 hour continuous modelling challenge, requiring sustained focus, collaboration and creativity. Their solution stood out nationally and internationally, leading to their invitation to New York to present their work in person.
On the day, the team presented their solution live to a panel of expert judges, fielding challenging and in depth questions with confidence and clarity. The presentation was streamed live on YouTube and watched by friends, family and a full Sixth Form common room back at school!
This achievement reflects not only exceptional mathematical ability, but also resilience, teamwork and the confidence to perform on a global stage. We are incredibly proud of the team and the way they represented both the school and themselves throughout this remarkable journey.
