A US university education is an exciting alternative to studying in the UK. One of the key differences which makes the US so attractive is the flexibility offered in an undergraduate degree with far greater scope than here in the UK for trying new subjects before specialising later. Increasing numbers of our students are seriously considering America, leading some to make an application to US universities and then to take up a university place there. We are committed to helping all students realise their potential, both at Habs and beyond, and all are encouraged at least to consider their higher education possibilities outside the UK.
Applying to American universities involves a vastly different process to applying to universities in the UK and we work closely with UES, a company which offers expert tuition and support for US applications. Two recent events in November helped to inform students and parents about the opportunities in America: at our in-person Lower Sixth Higher Education evening, UES gave a talk focusing on the application process for America and at our online event for students and parents in younger year groups, we were joined again by UES and also by Rob Thomas from Sporting Elite USA who was able to advise on the availability of US sports scholarships.
For those students who decide to make an application to American universities, we work closely with them to offer support and advice. The application process begins in earnest in Lower Sixth, and it is recommended that all applicants take a standardised test (SAT/ ACT) in the spring of Lower Sixth. During Lower Sixth, students will attend an essay writing workshop (submitting essays to universities is a critical part of the process), receive one to one guidance on their university choices and then, at the beginning of Upper Sixth, receive one to one feedback on their essays.
Coming up in May 2025, we are excited to be hosting an overseas universities fair which will be attended by representatives from US universities, as well as from Canada and Europe.
