The Art Department is extremely proud of Yanxi (12 JYB/SGK), who took part in the Regional Heat of the National Articulation Prize at Christie’s Auction House this term.  She delivered an impressive ten-minute presentation on Edwin Long’s painting The Babylonian Marriage Market (1875). She was up against eight other students and was judged by Dr Francesco Ventrella, Associate Professor in Art History at the University of Sussex. He commented that Yanxi delivered ‘a very powerful presentation’ and praised her for encouraging the audience to consider The Babylonian Marriage Market in relation to feminist theories of the traffic of women during the Victorian era, and for presenting this discussion through a contemporary lens.

Yanxi narrowly missed out on reaching the Grand Final, finishing in second place overall. She gained a great deal from the experience of public speaking and meeting like-minded students with a passion for Art History. She is now part of the Articulation alumni network and aims to build on her experience by promoting the Articulation Prize to future year groups. Well done, Yanxi!

With the competition held at Christie’s for the first time, we also took Georgie (12 AE/NM) (our internal heat runner-up) and our Year 10 Art Scholars; Clara (10 Alpha), Safiya (10 Aleph) and Ela (10 A). What a fascinating afternoon at the Auction House; as audience members we supported Yanxi and listened to a rich array of presentations. We were able to view the beautiful Shelter exhibition on display, and also Jeff Beck: The Guitar Collection. What a treat to view Kurt Cobain’s guitar up close! Our Year 10 Art Scholars took great inspiration from the competition itself and recently entered themselves into our first year of the Discover Articulation Challenge, aimed at Key Stage 4 students.
