The U11 and U9 teams were proudly represented in two semi-final chess competitions. The first, the Zonal ESPA Primary School event, hosted here at Habs Girls’ School. The second was the prestigious English Chess Federation Girls Schools Championships, held at St Catherine’s School in Bramley, Surrey. This highly acclaimed event saw participation from 61 schools, some entering multiple teams.

Saturday 25 January – Zonal Primary School Competition

Three teams from our school participated – one in the U11 division and two in the U9 division. All teams performed incredibly well over five matches. The U11 team secured 4th place out of ten teams. In the U9 category, which featured 12 teams, Habs A placed 5th while Habs B finished 11th.

Both Habs A teams in the under-11 and under-9 categories successfully qualified for the competition finals, set to take place in the summer term.

Sunday 26th January – English Chess Federation Girls Schools Championships (U11 and U19)

Two teams represented the school in this prestigious event – Habs A and Habs B in the U11 division. The youngest competitor, Eena (3 AM) from Habs B, played board number 1 at just seven years old.

All the girls demonstrated diligence and resilience throughout the five matches. The Habs A U11 team performed exceptionally, securing 2nd place out of 61 school teams. Remarkably, both our teams played so well that they were randomly selected to compete against each other! Teachers from various schools praised the students’ skill and sportsmanship.

The teams were awarded plaques and medals from the English Chess Federation, and the school received a special plaque in recognition of their achievements. The final for this event, a two-day tournament, is set to take place in April, where Habs A U11s will represent the school.

  • Habs A U11: Elise (6 CS), Myra (6 RB), and Mayya (6 CS) – 2nd place
  • Habs B U11: Eena Anand (3 AM), Aleesha (5JM), and Demira (5JM) – 22nd place

Thank you to Mr Eden, team manager and chess coach at both the junior and senior schools. A fantastic achievement for all involved, with three finals coming up across both competitions!
