Our Year 7, 8 and 9 Drama and Creative Writing Scholars recently enjoyed an inspiring visit to Sky Studios Academy, just down the road in Elstree, where they gained a first-hand insight into the world of film and television production. Elstree is, of course, synonymous for many with a tradition of film and television making. The Sky Studios in Elstree are relatively new, having opened their doors in 2023. The UK’s creative industries are among the most successful in the world, contributing around £126 billion to the economy last year alone and offering a wealth of opportunities for young people with ambition and imagination.

During the morning, students explored the breadth of roles available in the industry, discovering first-hand the essential contributions of directors, producers, camera operators and editors. Working in teams of ten, they took on key roles to develop a pitch film, crafting a three-scene sequence under real-world time pressures and using industry-standard technology. The experience demanded not only creativity, but collaboration and quick thinking, with all the students having to master new equipment moments before recording began.

Beyond the technical aspects of filmmaking, students also engaged with industry professionals, learning about career pathways and the diverse skill sets that drive success in film and TV. The visit also provided a valuable opportunity for students to reflect on their own strengths and interests, considering how they might one day contribute to this thriving sector.

Throughout the morning, the students demonstrated teamwork and problem-solving. With tight deadlines, they had to prioritise tasks, communicate effectively and adapt to new challenges – all within an immersive creative environment.

The visit not only broadened horizons but also reinforced the importance of the creative industries as a dynamic and leading field – one in which our students may well be the next generation of storytellers and innovators.

We have facility to use a small green screen and podcast equipment in our new Innovation Space. Students are welcome to book the space for student-run clubs, and it is available to all teachers to book for use with their classes.
