On a recent visit to St Helen’s School for a Year 10 Physics Competition, four students – Arianna (10 Ansuz), Issie (10 Aesc), Tiffany (10 Ansuz), and Sophia (10 Ansuz) – represented our school with great enthusiasm and skill.
Sophia shared her experience of the day:
“I found the Year 10 St Helen’s Physics Competition to be an enriching and memorable experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the various challenges throughout the day and had a great time engaging with the subject of physics beyond the classroom. Our team placed 4th out of 20 schools, which we were very pleased about.
Throughout the competition, we participated in three main events – the practical experiment, the equations race and the physics-themed escape room. The practical experiment presented an interesting test related to Hooke’s Law and spring constants. I found it both enjoyable and thought-provoking, as it required us to use our critical analysis skills while also encouraging us to work collaboratively and communicate well as a team.
The equations race was exhilarating, and I particularly enjoyed the timed pressure, which created a much different – and perhaps more exciting – atmosphere compared to an exam hall. However, my favourite part of the day was the physics escape room. This challenge pushed our team to the limits, encouraging us to think quickly and adapt to our surroundings, and we left the room absolutely buzzing. We achieved an exceptional time of 10 minutes and 50 seconds, which was the third-fastest time overall.
We were also fortunate enough to receive a talk from a Cambridge engineering graduate, who is now a civil engineer, which provided us with a deeper understanding of STEM as a career. Overall, I found the day to be exceptionally fun, and it was certainly an experience I will not be forgetting soon.”
Congratulations to the team for their outstanding performance and positive spirit!
