Earlier this term, nine Lower Sixth students, comprising the new Economics Society Committee, attended the Economics in Action conference at the Emmanuel Centre in London.
The day begin with a talk by Ayeisha Thomas-Smith (New Economics Foundation) on the limitations of GDP as an economic indicator. This was followed by Stephen Davies (Institute of Economic Affairs) on common misconceptions in Economics. The morning concluded with wise advice from Peter Jordan (EzyEconomics) on revision and exam technique.
The afternoon session was particularly strong, commencing with Nye Cominetti (Resolution Foundation) speaking on the labour market, before Anna Bird (Behavioural Insights Team) spoke on behavioural economics in practice. The day’s last speaker was the liveliest – Bobby Seagull (ex-Lehman Brothers trader and star of University Challenge) on financial market crashes.
Our new Committee conducted themselves in exemplary fashion and two members were able to ask questions of the speakers. We look forward to developing some of the ideas discussed at our own meetings and hope to see some of the speakers at Habs in the future!
