A well-rounded education will take you out of the classroom, offering exciting opportunities for you to develop a wide range of soft skills such as leadership and self-confidence.

All our activities take place on a Friday from 3.00pm to 5.00pm. They are part of your Friday options, but once you sign up, attendance becomes part of your curriculum.

How do you choose your activities?

You can opt to:

  • Join the Combined Cadet Force (CCF)
  • Take part in Outdoor Education
  • Participate in School and Community Service (SCS)

Students choose their activities in Year 9 and begin them in years 10, 11 and 12. If you join Habs in Sixth Form, you will choose your options when you start.

Combined Cadet Force (CCF)

Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is an educational partnership between secondary schools and the Ministry of Defence. It can include the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, Army or Royal Air Force sections.

Over 500 secondary schools across the UK take part, offering you a broad range of challenging, exciting and adventurous activities. CCF will develop your personal responsibility, leadership and self-discipline.

At Habs, you can choose from:

  • Army
  • Navy
  • RAF

Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education (OE) aims to instil a love for the outdoors for all who take part. You can engage in a range of activities, such as mountain biking, climbing, orienteering and archery.

You can also gain your PADI diving qualification as part of the course.

School and Community Service (SCS)

Get involved in projects designed to help you think about others and the world around us. SCS will build your volunteering, sustainability and animal care skills. You could take part in:

  • Care Homes – visit to entertain residents at a local care home
  • Food Banks – help at a local food bank in sorting donations and assist visitors to the food bank
  • Sports – help staff to plan and lead sessions for younger students
  • Chickens and allotments – help care for the chickens and allotments

Duke of Edinburgh (DofE)

Added to the Friday afternoon programme, we also offer the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Our programme has been designed to support and challenge students from Year 9 upwards in working their way through the three levels of award: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

At the start of each academic year, Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth students are invited to join the Gold award. You can complete your practice and qualifying expeditions during the school holidays.
