Habs athletes had a very busy week at the end of June as a big team attended the District championships and a select few made the trip to Birmingham for the National Independent schools championships.

Habs retained the overall boys trophy in the Districts and were winners in the year 9 and 10 age groups and the school can boast a number of District champions across the age groups.

Tolu Elesin deserves congratulations on being voted Under 14 male athlete of the meet for his outstanding run in winning the 300m and Zamaan Dudhia on breaking the Under 14 school pole vault record with a clearance of 2.80m. Joe Grainger, Freddy Nash and Michael Miller all managed to secure javelin titles.

Ashley Turner and Dylan Kaposi are pole vault champions and track athletes Matthew Copley, Henry Rocha and Jamie Harper in year 9 won their races in confident style. Alistair Afeeva’s triple jumping has been improving all season and he was rewarded with a 12.14m jump to win the title. The year 9 and 10 teams finished with dominant runs in the relays, both winning by over a second.

The success in the District championships was even more pleasing considering 6 of our best athletes were competing at Birmingham and 4 of these managed to gain top three places and win a national medal. Yanarthan Sriskantharajah came 3rd in the Under 14 hurdles, Ben Bellman 3rd in the Under 14 300m in another school record of 40.39, Henry Mattey 3rd in the Under 14 discus with another throw over 30 metres and finally Rohan Oyewole who led the whole competition with a throw of over 35 metres until literally the last effort of the whole competition when he was pipped to the gold by just 20cms. Jeevan Bhullar ran another sub 25.5 second time to finish 4th in the 200m final and Jacob Steinberg, slightly down on his season’s best finished 7th in the shot.

The penultimate week of term sees the Under 14’s and Under 16’s competing in the finals of our two big inter school competitions, both teams going to the Herts League final at Jarman Park on Tuesday 30th June and then the U16’s competing in the ESAA Track and Field Cup final at Bedford on Saturday the 4th of July. Good luck to both teams.
