A short while ago, the School’s A and B chess teams played each other in a round of tense, long play games in Aldenham House. These pupils have been honing their skills for years, often against each other, under the tutelage of International Master Lorin D’Costa. In the spirit of cordiality, they played strong and elegant games. Unsurprisingly, the final score was 2½- 2½.

The rules dictate that Habs A win on ‘board count’. Nonetheless, the B team qualify for the finals through repechage. However, the ECF have suspended future games in the tournament until further notice. The finals, if they had been held, would have been played at Eton and Uppingham School this June.

The teams’ mastery on the chess board is formidable and they deserve every success. Moreover, their courtesy, humility, sportsmanship, drive and enthusiasm have been unfailing and impressive. They have worked hard and stepped in for each other when necessary for the good of the team.
