On Monday 21 March 2016, a group of nine boys and nine girls from the Lower Sixth went to Europe House in Westminster to compete in the European Youth Parliament South East Regional Forum.

Habs fielded two combined teams made up of a mixture of pupils from both the Boys’ and Girls’ Schools. The boys involved were: Sahil Baid, James Caplan, Tom Goulde, Daniel Hails, Bilal Hasna, Joe Koopman, Richard Matheson, Joe Saffer and Zac Wagman. We debated against nine other teams on EU-based issues, ranging from the environment to the economy and membership of the EU to terrorism and refugees.

After a number of debates, including a foreign language debate, the Habs teams emerged as two of the top three teams, earning a place for both teams in the national final, held in Liverpool later this year. Although Habs has had teams qualify for the nationals four years in a row, this was the first time ever that both teams had qualified. It was just reward for the hard work, enthusiasm and enjoyment of all those involved.

Mr Gathani, Deputy Housemaster of Meadows, said: “I was so, so proud of all the boys at Regionals. They were just super. Organised, prepared, determined, charismatic; it really was a superb achievement by them!”
