March Field Day for the CCF Royal Navy section saw a whole host of different activities! Year 10 camped out overnight and got some mileage in their legs in preparation for this Easter’s Okehampton Duke of Edinburgh camp.
A select group of boys accompanied Mr Hall and Dr Chapman to Datchet for some high-octane dinghy action. Meanwhile, the remaining 36 cadets from Yr 11 and L6 accompanied Messrs Whalley, Kingdon, Handley, Hardman and Dr Joyce to Croxley Common Moor for another monster Scrub Bashing session! The cadets toiled for 5 hours cutting and removing a huge amount of ‘brash’ that was then burnt. Croxley Common Moor is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and our Navy cadets have volunteered their time and muscle over a number of Field Days to help maintain this unique piece of Hertfordshire landscape.
Our sincere thanks to the cadets for their enthusiasm, humour and willingness to ‘get stuck in’. Further thanks to Fabian Hiscock, Ian Ward & John Watton who, as ‘Friends of Croxley Common Moor,’ (FCCM) volunteer once a month outside the nesting season to keep the ‘scrub’ under control. Our three ‘Friends’ had taken the day off work to assist in the work and direct operations.
In just one day, Habs Navy cadets performed a task that would have taken FCCM an entire season to complete! Outstanding!
