On Saturday 5 December 2020, 19 Haberdashers’ students represented five countries at the Lingfield College Virtual Model United Nations (MUN) Conference and achieved outstanding success!
Considering the current circumstances with the COVID-19 pandemic, many conferences have gone online and this was the first one we participated in. Despite unusual conditions, everyone maintained high spirits and engaged consistently and critically in the debates of their respective committees.
Discussing increasingly relevant topics from the management of future global pandemics, the question of tackling extreme poverty in the African basin and the prevention of the formation of dictatorships among newly independent nations, delegates raised their (virtual) placards high and contributed to some amazing resolutions and solutions.
In the last few hours of the day, delegates were divided into different groups to discuss a hypothetical Martian colonization scenario. With an attention-grabbing topic and so many delegates packed into each group, fierce debate led to elections and frenzied negotiations with the prospect of nuclear weapons aimed at London being narrowly avoided.
Overall, it was a thrilling experience and everyone was grateful for the opportunity to attend. On top of that, many of our students won awards; Julien (L6H1) and Lucas (L6H1) were both highly commended delegates in their respective committees, and they joined Keshav (11H1) and Zak (10S1) in winning the highly commended delegation award for Japan!
