Fling OS is an educational operating system project, founded by Edward Nutting (OH) while he was in Upper Sixth (February 2014). Since then the project has grown from a self-teach hobby project to a full-scale system. Fling OS is aiming to fill the gap in freely available, online resources for learning low-level development and operating systems development. Using his own experience of self-teaching, Edward is aiming to create code, articles and tutorials to enable others who do not have access to paid-for-only or University content.

Along the way the project has grown and now Fling OS has received backing from Imagination Technologies®. Imagination Technologies is one of the biggest companies worldwide in hardware and low-level software IP. The sponsorship they are providing will be used to employ a student from the University of Bristol for a summer placement during which Edward will teach the student. Following this, the placement student will be helping Fling OS by completing development tasks and creating educational resources.

Additionally, Edward will be collaborating with Imagination Technologies and the University of Bristol (where he is currently studying Computer Science and Electronics, 1st Year) to deliver a series of lunchtime lectures. The lectures will run alongside the University course to introduce second and third year Computer Science students to low-level development.

This is not the first time Edward has attempted his own projects – he has several successful open-source, online projects that are currently available. Thanks must also go to the Careers department, who put Edward in contact with Imagination Technologies for work experience after GCSEs. Since then Edward has worked two highly-coveted, paid internships for them, which are usually reserved for undergraduates.

While the project is only just over a year old, it shows great promise and aims to be the biggest, single site for OS development resources by the end of the summer. We look forward to following Edward’s progress in the coming years!
