This half term, Habs welcomed over 70 Early Career Teachers (ECTs) to school for the last ECT conference of the year. Habs Boys is a regional centre for ECT training, and we work closely with the Independent Schools Teacher Induction Panel (ISTIP), our awarding body, to train and support ECTs during their two-year induction. It was lovely to meet Amy Cooper FCCT FRSA, ISTIP’s Director of Training, who joined us today for the conference.
The conference included sessions on #Diversity and #Inclusion, led by Heads of Diversity and Inclusion Monia Sahar Zahid and Sabrina Nanji (Haberdashers’ Girls’ School), who spoke passionately about how we can use different lenses to plan our curriculum and embed Diversity and Inclusion in all aspects of school life.
We also heard from Mike Carter, a body language consultant, who demonstrated the importance of both verbal and non-verbal communication when working with students and parents and the important issue of looking after and using our voices.
The final sessions of the day focused on the teacher/parent relationship, with Boys’ School Deputy Head (Pastoral), Claire Shooter, and Boys’ School Head of House (Russells), Michael Broadwith, role playing and analysing the dos and don’ts of patent/student/teacher meetings.
Finally, the day ended with a parent panel which reinforced the messaging of the day around the importance of positive communication in our interactions with students and parents.
Thank you to the wonderful group of ECTs who joined us today and engaged so positively with the programme. We look forward to welcoming them back to Habs Boys in 2024.
