We are pleased and proud to congratulate Haberdasher Jacob Whitehead (OH 2016) on winning The David Welch Student Sportswriter of The Year Award 2018.

The student sportswriting competition was launched in 2012 in memory of the former sports editor of The Daily Telegraph, David Welch. The competition is dedicated to uncovering the next generation of brilliant writers who understand that coverage of sport – both in its breadth and detail – can encompass everything from comedy to tragedy to trenchant opinion, colour and illuminating thought.

Entrants were asked to submit three pieces of writing no longer than 600 words each on the subject of sport, wide ranging to include a sporting event, a feature or interview and a Sporting Top 10, of which one should cover women’s sport in 2017.

Jacob competed against hundreds of other passionate writers, submitting articles on one of the most recognised climbers in the world Alex Honnold, A blog “What women’s cycling in Afghanistan can teach us, and Top 10 Sad Sporting Goodbyes.

Against tough competition, Jacob was awarded the overall winner and received his award on stage at the prestigious British Journalism Awards 2017 in London.

As winner of the 2018 Award, Jacob will be acknowledged in The Daily Telegraph and have one of his submissions published on The Telegraph website. He also received a week’s internship experience, culminating in the opportunity to attend a sports event to write his own report, accompanied by one of the newspaper’s journalists.

We would like to congratulate Jacob on this fantastic achievement and we are certain that he will continue on to great things in the world of sporting journalism.
