Ishaan (Lower Sixth) delivered an assembly to the Prep School on the topic of modern slavery and human trafficking. He simplified the information so that the younger boys were able to digest and process what was being said.

“Slavery is the act of owning someone without their permission. If you own someone, force them to do work, don’t pay them and make them live in very bad conditions – that is slavery… and human trafficking is the movement of people from one house to another, or one town to another, or even one country to another illegally and then forcing them into slavery.”

There are more than 45.8 million people trapped in slavery globally. 1 in 3 of those slaves is a child; the average price for a child in the UK is £70. Today, human beings are the fastest growing product, making human trafficking the second largest criminal enterprise.

However, slavery is not an issue in faraway countries and communities, it is also existing right here in the UK. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) estimates that there are 136,000 slaves in the UK today – a 950% increase in the past three years.

After sharing some alarming facts about slavery, Ishaan moved on to the main focus of his assembly which was ‘How can you be a part of the solution?’ and shared his ‘Top 5 Tips on how to tackle slavery to the students

1) Educate yourself. Ensure you are aware of the issue

2) Educate others. Once you are aware of the issue, spread the word and let your friends and family know that slavery still exits.

3) Meet with or write to your local councillors or MP – slavery could be occurring in your town and so, ask your councillors what they are doing to prevent slavery on a local level.

4) Stay safe on social media –Traffickers will use social media to trick and lure children into being trafficked. Be responsible, only talk to people you know and stay safe.

5) Be a conscientious consumer. Ishaan felt that as consumers, this is the most effective way that we can tackle slavery.

Ishaan explained to the students that each product we use has a supply chain, a series of processes and actions to make a product. The device you’re reading this on, the food you eat, even the bricks to make your home, they all have a supply chain.

Ishaan concluded:

“So, my message to you today is to not take your human rights for granted. There are hundreds of millions of people across the globe who do not have access to basic human rights. Use the position, the amazing education, the freedom and rights you have to step up and be a force of positive social impact. Be aware that slavery is still occurring but also be aware that you can do something about it.”
