On Thursday 28 April, the Economics Society were privileged to have Paul Jacobus, Director of Regulation at Ofcom and Tony Ma, Economics Graduate at Ofcom giving the Society an insightful and thought-provoking talk into the role of Ofcom, the telecoms regulator.
The boys were particularly fascinating to hear about Ofcom’s involvement in the recent BT-EE merger, their potential future role regulating the BBC and, more generally, some of the practical steps they take to encourage long-term innovation/competition in the sector, such as widening access to BT’s duct and pole infrastructure in order to incentivise competition with BT Openreach.
