On Tuesday 1 March, Ashley Blaker (OH 1993) visited the School to speak to the Jewish Society.

Mr Blaker studied history before having an extremely successful career in broadcasting, working with the BBC and other channels, and with stars such as Matt Lucas and Graham Norton. He is currently touring the country as a comedian.

Ashley Blaker spoke to a large group of students on the “The Heeb at the Beeb: How to be Funny and Frum.” He talked about his career, some of his anecdotes from the broadcasting industry and his experiences working for the BBC. This was followed by an enthusiastic Question and Answer session, with topics ranging from his funniest memories from Habs to how his Judaism has affected his work.

The event was just one of a series of events run by the Jewish Society, who host an external speaker every week. The society meets every week for ‘Nosh n Learn’ sessions, where a hot, kosher lunch is provided, and speakers come to speak to the boys on a wide range of religious and non-religious topics. One of the best-attended societies in the school, this talk was a chance for boys to hear from somebody who had been in their place, and to consider life in broadcasting.

The talk was a fantastic opportunity for students, and was a thoughtful insight into the world of the media. It was enjoyed by all those present, and the J-Soc would like to thank Ashley Blaker for coming to speak to us.
