On the evening of Monday 23 November a very special Haberdashers’ Prep School choir joined with the Watford Grammar School for Girls to welcome the Sparrow School choir for a concert.

Sparrow School from South Africa is a school for children who suffer with learning, behavioural and emotional difficulties. Many of the children who attend the Sparrow School are orphans and have already encountered great difficulties in their young lives. Both Habs and Watford Grammar School support Sparrow.

Earlier in the year Habs Prep organised a hugely successful ‘Auction of Promises’ which raised £12,400 to provide an all-weather court for the Foundation School in Melville, Johannesburg. During the October half term holiday, the Prep boys raised some more money in their sponsored read to help with the school fees of two children, Absolem and Gabriela.

The joint concert was a wonderful occasion involving over 100 boys and 100 girls performing in the first half of the concert. The second half provided the audience with a marvellous performance from the Sparrow choir with their tribute to Mandela. The finale saw all three choirs join together to sing ‘Asimbonanga’ (we have not seen Mandela) and the national anthem of South Africa.

It was a truly memorable evening. Thank you to everyone who supported the event, which raised £3,000.00!

On Tuesday morning the Sparrow choir took a workshop session in the Prep hall with Year 3 (and a Year 6 drama class) then performing in assembly for all the Prep boys.

It has been a delight to host the choir who have now moved onto Oxford on their 14-day UK tour which culminates on Thursday 3 December with a performance at the Sparrow School Foundation’s ‘Celebration of Christmas’ at the Royal Chelsea Hospital.
