It was lovely to have some wind last Friday for the Royal Navy Sailing Field Day trip to Queen Mary Reservoir. Following our visit in October when the reservoir was like a mirror, we were all hoping for some more challenging conditions. 25 cadets braved the cold and firm breeze to improve and diversify their sailing skills. Under the keen eye of the Chief Instructor at Queen Mary, OH Ross Malloy, the boys tried their hand at sailing larger double-handed boats in one session and RS Qubas and Picos in another. Many of the boats capsized, as always happens when the boys are pushing themselves to improve, and the boys dealt with the situation calmly and sensibly, putting into action their training from their RYA courses. Post-sailing doughnuts were consumed with vigour after a physically demanding day of activity.
