Six Habs athletes became Herts County schools champions at Jarman Park on Saturday 6th June. With some rather difficult windy conditions the throwers excelled with Michael Miller winning the U17 javelin throwing 46.73m, Freddy Nash winning the U 15 Javelin with 37.55m and Rohan Oyewole finishing 3rd with a throw over 34 meters in the same event and Ollie Hocking winning the U15 discus with 33.49m. In the Pole Vault, Louis Flinn won the U15 title with 3.20m and Zamaan Dudhia competing a year young finished 3rd with 2.50m. In the U17’s Dylan Kaposi cleared 3.05m but came close to clearing 3.20 as he claimed the U17 title.
Jamie Harper won the U15 1500m title in 4m.21.7 secs in a virtually solo effort from gun to tape. Jamie is now beginning to put in some consistent performances and although this was not his best time this season he will be hoping to improve to a time near to 4m.15sec, as he seeks selection to the County team for the ESAA national championships in July.
Matthew Copley ran a strong race in the final of the U15 300m to claim second in a time just under 39secs. Matthew has run quicker this season but conditions in the back straight were tough into a very strong headwind and thus made fast times difficult.
Probably one of the closest races of the day was the U17 800m where Adam Shiret led out a strong field and held that lead until the 600m mark. The finish was always going to be competitive with 4 athletes in contention. Adam in his quest for a time under 2.00 mins for the two lap race paid the price for his bold efforts early on and finally finished 4th in 2m.02secs.
In all Habs had 21 athletes competing at the championships, other top six placings were, Animesh Misra 3rd U17 shot, Roshan Patel 6th U13 Discus, Luckshman Sivathasan 6th U15 shot, Joe Saffer 2nd U17 400m Hurdles.
Selection for the Herts Schools County team is based upon these results, so those who finish first or second are potentially in line for selection. Hopefully we will see some of these Habs athletes compete in the ESAA National Championships on the second weekend of July.
