‘We just talked about all of the different friends we made.’ (Joe)
It’s lunchtime and five of our Year 7 boys are sitting on a grassy bank outside the Design and Technology block, enjoying a bit of afternoon sun. Joe is laughing energetically as he and his friends talk about all the new people that they’ve met.
Indeed, it’s been a busy week for our Year 7, with buddy meetings, wellbeing toolkits and assemblies covering every aspect of school life.
We caught up with four boys to hear their opinions about the new term!
Saul: Buddy Meetings and Wellbeing
For Saul, a highlight of the week was Thursday lunchtime, in which he got to catch up with Max from Meadows in the School Buddy meeting.
‘It was good to have someone to talk to. It was nice to know that if you have any questions, you always have someone who has experienced it first who you can talk to.’
Jack: HabsDash and Cross-Country Running
The highpoint of the week for Jack was HabsDash, in which boys across the School community are invited to run three laps across the grounds in a cross-country race. Personal bests are recorded and diversity is celebrated.
‘I loved HabsDash. It’s a two-mile race around school and I’m going to try every single one. You’ll run over 400 miles if you complete all of them during your time at Habs. With HabsDash I’ll be able to train for all sorts of sports and fitness. It was really exciting, and I got a good time of 18 minutes!’
Joe: School Grounds and Making Friends
As Joe mentioned earlier, a highlight for him has been all the new friends he has made. Getting on the coach from Mill Hill Broadway, he’s been able to meet new people such as Covi and Nathan. However, what he’s really enjoyed has been having the space to get out and explore:
‘It’s so nice because there are benches, ponds and wildlife. It’s not all concrete and you can sometimes just sit on the grass and chat. We just talked about all of the different friends we made.’
Ollie: Rugby and Pre-Season Training
Finally, we have Ollie, who has most enjoyed the sport in the first week at School. With an upcoming fixture against St Columba’s School, he’s been training hard and devising tactics for the match ahead. Talking to us about his training, he mentioned:
‘We started off with tag rugby to get used to it. Then we went into contact. You go as low as possible to stop them. Some of us knew how to spin, which makes you able to get more height on the ball and go further. It was quite fun seeing the differences between each player.’
We wish all of our Year 7 the very best of luck for the School year ahead. Well done on finishing your first week of School – you’ve been brilliant!
