Habs was delighted to welcome Ian Dickinson, sound designer for dozens of productions at The Royal Court, the National Theatre and for the RSC. Ian was also the winner of the Olivier Award for Best Sound Design for his work on ‘The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Night-Time’.

Last week, Ian visited the A Level Drama group to give a talk about his sound design for ‘Translations‘, one of the productions the pupils are studying for their Live Theatre component.
Ian gave a fascinating insight into the way that sound design creates atmosphere and creates meaning and focused on some particular moments from the show which he encouraged the boys to analyse with forensic detail in terms of direction, pitch, use of specially made instruments, transitions, layering of effects and diegetic and non-diegetic sound.

We were extremely grateful that he took time out of his busy schedule to talk to us and look forward to hearing his sound design when we see ‘The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe‘ at the Bridge Theatre in January.
