On Friday 7 October, Year 3 became Romans and historians for the day. Mike and Jill from “Adventures Into” brought in a range of artefacts to bring the Year 3 Roman history topic to life. The boys prepared for the day by researching and designing their own shields at home, which they used in army training and battle formations. They thoroughly enjoyed organising themselves into a testudo whilst opponents fired foam javelins at them. Jill, an archaeologist specialising in Roman history guided the boys in deciphering the meanings of engravings on Roman coins and they also handled real Roman artefacts, making decisions about what type of house or workshop the artefacts came from. The day ended with a session where the boys smelt herbs and other foods used in Roman meals and even tasted a pastry dish made with rotten fish paste. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Some quotes from the day:
“The Roman day was amazing as it was educational and fun at the same time.”
“I felt amazed at how clever the Romans were.”
