With such a large, vibrant and diverse cohort of Year 7 students in 2018-19, the History Department were eagerly anticipating the submission of this year’s Family History projects. They were extremely impressed with the quality of the boys’ research and presentations.
Since 2010, every student in Year 7 has interviewed a family member about a historical event or process they lived through. These interviews are then written up and presented as part of a Family History exhibition. The History Department were delighted to host on Tuesday 14 May 2019 in the Bourne Hall a tea for the Year 7 boys, their parents and some of the relatives who were interviewed. This was a splendid occasion and allowed for several conversations between staff, boys, parents and other guests. Many of our pastoral team attended.
Mr Clark, Head of History, briefly spoke and thanked three groups of people. Firstly, he thanked the boys whose projects suggest that they are already developing a deep love of History and of scholarship that we seek to nurture. Secondly, he thanked the parents and guests for sharing their memories with the boys and allowing for conversations between the generations to take place. Historical memory is a great source of inspiration and wisdom. Finally, Mr Clark expressed his gratitude to the Year 7 History teachers for leading the boys through these exciting journeys of discovery. There were memories captured from over thirty countries and four continents, a testament to the diversity of the Habs community.
We look forward to supporting the current Year 7s next year when they will undertake their Oral History projects, interviewing Old Haberdashers’ about some of their memories of the school.
