On the 4th of October 2018, we were fortunate to have Mr Daniel Morgenstern, a successful graphic designer, to come in to Habs to deliver a workshop on illustration during our Graphic Communication lesson. He demonstrated his knowledge on how to make collages, as he used to work for the Sunday Times where he made different types of artwork on different medias on a weekly basis.
I was inspired when he showed us his stunning work on a computer designed program called ‘Photoshop’ where he made images of many famous people. We were given a task to design a self-portrait by using a common graphic design technique known as ‘collage’. He gave us each a magazine, with a variety of adverts and full of diverse photos. The equipment we used included: mirrors, scissors, rulers, glue sticks and black markers.
Firstly, we produced a logo which reflected ourselves, maybe our initials or our first name, which was placed on the top left corner of our collage. Afterwards, we scanned through the magazine looking for different images to, either cut out using scissors or use a ruler to carefully rip the page out.
I used many layers of multiple images to form a black, starry night background and then, I found a black item in the magazine which was used to cut out my glasses and a brown car picture which was used as my skin tone. After gluing all these different images to the front page of the magazine, I had made a magnificent collage which reflected me as a funny person as my smile had my tongue sticking out.
I would definitely recommend this workshop as it was enjoyable as well as engaging which has given me an insight of just how creative and imaginative you can be just by using a magazine. Thank you Mr Morgenstern for this amazing opportunity.
