On Tuesday 16th June the Under 16 Athletics squad travelled to the Lee Valley Athletics stadium to compete in the East of England round of the English Schools Track and Field Athletics Cup. They faced formidable opposition with many of the top schools in the UK competing. The format of this event requires every athlete to compete in one track and one field event, and individuals are then awarded points on their performances. HABS needed to consolidate on their very impressive first round score of 550 to progress into the National finals in July.
They set their target of 560+ points However, the day did not start well, in the very first event one of the HABS Pole Vaulters failed to register a height and scored no points. The team now realised that qualification was not so straight forward and as a result HABS were playing ‘catch-up’ for the remainder of the meeting. This they did, with some outstanding performances across the board, every athlete managed to gain a personal best or score that magical 25 points in their individual events and HABS did qualify with a score of 542. So they will now compete in the National finals on Saturday 4th July at Bedford International Athletics Track.
Those individual who scored 25 points or more were:
Ollie Hocking – with 25 points in the Discus (34.64m)
Ade Tokuta – with 29 points in the Hurdles (11.2s)
Dylan Kaposi – with 26 points in the 100m (11.7s)
Michael Miller with 26 points in the Javelin (49.41m)
Matt Copley – with 25 points in the 300m (39.3s)
Adam Shiret – with 25 points in the 800 (2.02.4)
Alistair Afeeva – with 25 points in the Hurdles (12.0s)
Fayo Timi Alabi with 27 points in the Shot (13.57m)
As a result Alistair Afeeva (Track) and Fayo Timi Alabi (Field), both win athlete of the meeting medals and also now join the ranks of Elite Athlete status. The following day (Wednesday 17th June), both the Under 14 and Under 16 teams competed in the final round of the Hertfordshire Athletics League at the Jarman Park Athletics Track and both won convincingly to confirm their positions at the top of the league and win the respective league titles! They now go through to the Hertfordshire Schools League Finals on Tuesday 30th June in very confident mood!
