Soon after the School broke up for the summer break, a handful of students were involved in a four-day summer sailing course and received either The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Level 1 or Level 2.
Mr Chapman, Mr Hall and Mr Hardman ran the course after much organisation and liaising with the parents by Dr G Chapman. Old Haberdashers’ Jack Talboys and Harry Jukes, both RYA Dinghy Instructors, joined staff and current Habs boys for all four days out in the water to provide further experience and instruction.
Further help was provided by Nikhil (L6M), who is RYA Power-boat qualified, along with Kazim (10C) and Oscar (10C). Fabulous work was shown from all three in terms of boat maintenance, helping to launch and recover dinghies before putting everything back in shipshape condition. It was also a pleasure for staff to see Zak (L6R), who will be next years’ Cox, toward the end of the course.
Miss Willows, who will be joining the RN section in September, joined the boys for the first two days of the course while Mr Schuetz sailed with the group all week. Mr Schuetz also helped Mr Hardman restore a Laser and cleaned up an old Topper, both of which will be available to see at an Open Day in October!
Despite a 15-minute period of calm, staff and students were blessed with a gentle breeze throughout their time spent on the water, which picked up to a decent breeze for those involved to participate in some hard-fought races – a fitting end to the course!
The School would like to thank Dr G Chapman, Mr Hall and Mr Hardman for organising and running the course, and Mr A Chapman who made sure those involved never went hungry!
