The school recently hosted the Fraser Bird Rugby 7s competition. In recent years, the competition has been dominated by Monmouth and Adams Grammar School. The last time a school outside of those two raised the silver goblet was Haberdashers’ Boys’ School (Elstree), approximately 19 years ago.
On Thursday 3 March, Habs saw the Elstree name once again engraved as winners of the Fraser Bird Trophy.
Lieutenant Colonel Fraser Bird (former school governor at Elstree) who sought to bring all of the affiliated Haberdasher schools together to enjoy each others company through the medium of sporting competition. The rugby tournament started in 1974, closely followed by an invitational 1st XI cricket match at Elstree and most latterly by an athletics meet. This year saw the rugby competition welcome Borough Academy for the first time.
This year’s tournament was formed of a round robin tournament for the U15 teams and a minimum of four matches for the U13s.
Our U13s went undefeated in their tournament while our U15 squad, just a day after their loss to Hill house in the National Bowl semi-final, won every match except one against Monmouth.
These set of results meant that the school had secured more points than any other side in the combined competition and secured us the Fraser Bird trophy. The captain of the U15 squad, Alex (10M2) accepted the trophy from a representative from Haberdasher Hall.
The school would like to acknowledge the fantastic level of sportsmanship that was shown by the staff of all the participating schools that allowed us to receive the trophy despite the U13 teams not playing all teams in the respective tournament.
Habs also extends thanks to the ground staff, who worked tirelessly to prepare the pitches despite recent heavy rain, the caterers who did a wonderful job in providing brilliant food throughout the day and the referees who ranged from members of our 1st XV squad to the PE department and through to David Reid from Herts Refereeing Society.
Well done and congratulations to all involved!
