For the first time in several years, Habs Prep school entered a year 4 team in the above tournament. They qualified unbeaten through the regional rounds in February to proudly fly the flag
for the school in this prestigious event. With teams attending from all regions of the country the level of rugby was remarkable for those of such a young age. For the Habs team to go through the whole event winning every game, scoring 21 tries and conceding only 7 must place them as one of the best teams in the country currently for their age.
The toughest fixture was their last against QEGS Wakefield securing the win by 5 tries to 3, but most impressive was their ability to play as a team both in attack and defence against a very strong traditional rugby school. As the tournament progressed it looked like this would be the toughest test and Mr Gareth Thomas, who has worked tirelessly with the boys throughout the autumn and spring terms, was rewarded with a commanding and disciplined display to establish an early lead and never look back.
It was a very rewarding day not only for the boys but also for the large Habs parental support who sportingly cheered all the good rugby on display but saved the biggest cheer for the final whistle in the last Habs match.
The team’s success made it on to Sky news at 5.00 read by one very proud Mum.
