The Chess ‘A’ team (Ravi Haria, Tarun Malhotra, Roman Mitra, Lawrence and Vincent Lee and David Xu) swept past St Olaves to reach the finals of the prestigious National Schools Championships for the 6th time in 10 years.

On paper, this is the strongest team Habs has had in recent times and they look forward to meeting Nottingham High School, Reading and Hampton across the boards in July at Uppingham College. Habs will be the clear favourites having crushed Reading (the current holders) 5-0 when they met in another tournament back in the Autumn.

The ‘B’ team (Ethan Sanitt, Purushot Sadagopan, Zac Greenberg, Shobhin Manocha, Harjivan Singh, Jai Tapuria et al) also qualified for the National Stages (last 16) of the Nationals – a tremendous achievement for the youngsters. They eventually succumbed to Queen Elizabeth’s Barnet.

The regular coaching from IM Lorin D’Costa is continuing to improve the squad and with some promising players joining from the prep next year the future looks very rosy indeed.
