At 5pm on Friday 1 November 2019, Mr Broadwith, teacher of Mathematics at The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School and an ‘Old Boy’ of the School, started the 24-Hour World Time Trial Championship (WTTC) in Borrego Springs, California.
Mr Broadwith covered an astonishing 510 miles in 24 hours and finished second out of 108 cyclists, winning the silver medal. The WTTC took place in the desert and the conditions were harsh, particularly overnight. Despite this, Mr Broadwith maintained an impressive average speed of just over 21mph. Mr Broadwith is the current holder of the Land’s End to John O’Groats cycling record, which he set in June of last year. He is also three time National 24-hour time trial champion.

When he returned from California, Mr Broadwith said: “It was a brilliant opportunity to compete against some of the top long-distance time trialists in the world. The desert was a very different and challenging place to race and a long 13-hour night section with temperatures dropping close to freezing meant a highly attritional race. I was delighted to finish on the podium and bring home a silver medal. I have been bowled over by all the support that I received before, during and after the event. This has included a very positive response from my colleagues and the pupils at Habs.”
All at Haberdashers’ congratulate Mr Broadwith on another remarkable feat. He is a shining example of how hard work and determination pay off to achieve success. He continues to inspire students and colleagues alike. Well done, Mr Broadwith!
