On the Thursday 1 December, all of Year 9 fine art were invited to take part in a James Lake work shop to create a portrait out of cardboard. This was a fantastic opportunity for all students to work in a new media and to meet an incredible sculpture artist.

The work shop began by assembling a skull using James’ templates which pushed their problem solving and communication skills. Once they had completed this the students were shown how to use James’ process to create texture and detail for a cardboard portrait. This allowed all students to make their own decisions on where they wanted to go next.

Murilo said: I learnt that you could use wire to bend the cardboard into shapes, and that it doesn’t need to be perfect. Overall, I really loved the experience and will definitely try doing it in the future.

Francesco added: I came into the James Lake workshop scared not knowing how I would do. I had never made any sculptures in my life or used a glue gun. This was a new experience for me but one where I learnt a lot from.

Neil commented: I found this as a wonderful experience. Throughout the day, we were taught different techniques to change the shape and texture of the cardboard.
