Making a difference with Mencap Funday: Habs community in action

Habs annual Mencap Funday was filled with incredible activities such as inflatables, science experiments, face painting, arts and crafts and even a petting zoo!

Each year this special event brings together the entire community to help support families with children with learning disabilities. As well as the children themselves, many of their siblings came to enjoy the day and have fun with their siblings. This created an incredible family atmosphere and allowed so many families to spend quality time together.

The Mencap committee could not have done this without the support of the student body who took part in the fundraisers throughout the year. These included the candy cane sale at Christmas, the netball match and the highly anticipated Mencap’s Got Talent, all of which allowed us to host this extraordinary event that brings joy to many Mencap families and Habs students.

One family commented that “The event was well run and had elements to delight all. The pony rides and ice-cream a firm hit, but also the inflatable games. New talents were discovered but most importantly fun was had! The volunteers were attentive to her (the child’s) needs and interacted on her level. Nothing was too much for them. They are a credit to the school and families.”

This day meant a lot to so many children, especially Isobel who said, “I had so much fun and I loved seeing my friends whenever I walked past them.”

As well as the Mencap families themselves, this day was important to Habs students. Senali (11 A) said that “Mencap Funday helped me understand the value of small acts of kindness and support that can make a big difference in people’s lives. It made my day watching all the kids smile and laugh as they took part in all the activities and threw themselves into trying new things.”

The Mencap committee Lia (11 Ansuz), Rahul (L6J1), Shay (L6C3), Betsy (12 SP/KAS), Odelya (12 MJ/JHB), Jolie (12 RD/CAP), Cheran (L6J3), Shenul (11R1) and Aerin (11 Ansuz) and the amazing chairs Jack (L6S2) and Tia (12 JYB/SGK).

We would like to thank everyone who took part in the special day, as well as teachers who took time out of their busy weekends to supervise. Thank you so much for helping us to create such a special and important day!
