Over 50 students from across both Habs Boys and Habs Girls took part in a specialist electrical design workshop, led by visiting STEM Ambassador Dr Alexey Kornienko, an Imaging Architect at Apple, where he works on systems that process and optimise images captured by modern devices. Drawing on extensive experience in both industry and research, he guided students through the principles of circuit design, electrical systems and engineering problem-solving.

The session combined expert instruction with hands-on practical work. Throughout the workshop, students applied their understanding to increasingly complex challenges, developing both their technical knowledge and systems-thinking skills. The interactive format generated exceptionally high levels of engagement, with students responding enthusiastically to the practical tasks and the opportunity to learn directly from an industry expert.

The workshop was further strengthened by the leadership of Hari (L6C3), whose training programme has played a key role in shaping this year’s CanSat journey. Head of Design and Technology, Miss Lauren Fagan and Head of Physics, Mr Rob Kerr were also in attendance to support students and the continued development of the programme.

This term marks the beginning of the design phase, with more than 105 students across 21 teams currently involved. Working collaboratively, students are developing the knowledge and skills required to design, build and test a functioning CanSat – a miniature satellite designed to carry out scientific missions during descent.

The Habs CanSat programme continues to grow as an ambitious, interdisciplinary STEM initiative, bringing together students from both schools to tackle real-world engineering challenges. With record participation and increasing technical sophistication, the CanSat programme is becoming an increasingly important part of the wider STEM enrichment landscape at Habs.

Alongside established opportunities such as VEX Robotics, it provides students with authentic engineering challenges that combine student leadership, industry expertise and hands-on problem-solving, helping to develop the skills, confidence and mindset needed for future success.

Now in its third year, the programme has already achieved significant success. In only its second year, Team Daedalus progressed to the UK National Finals in May 2026, reflecting both the enthusiasm of participating students and the increasing strength of the programme.
