On Friday 10th February a group of Y12 Theologians travelled to central London for the A-Level Theology Candle Conference, hosted by Dr Peter Vardy (former Vice Principal of Heythrop College, University of London) with further contributions from Dr Bernard Hoose and Dr David Webster. The topic for the day was Philosophy of Religion and Ethics, and students were invited to reflect in particular on arguments for the existence of God, religious experience, Natural Law, and the problem of evil. There was also chance for audience participation in the form of lively debates on related issues, which our students enjoyed.
The boys found the conference to be engaging and informative. Dr Vardy especially brought his own inimitable style and presence to proceedings, offering detailed analysis of course content and constant encouragements to ‘evaluate’! The debates on euthanasia and human potential provoked plenty of contribution from the floor with, it must be said, some of the most measured and articulate points coming from our own boys. Of particular benefit to the boys was the provision of a short textbook, based on the topics of the conference, which will aid their revision and help to consolidate all that they learnt on the day itself.
The day was a real success and the boys are looking forward to future trips with the T&P department.
