On Monday 13 June, 30 Year 12 Chemistry students from the Girls’ and Boys’ School joined together to take part in the RSC Schools’ Analyst Competition. This year the challenges were centred around creating the perfect plate of sustainable Fish and Chips. This involved looking for amino acids in flour, finding the sweetest potatoes, making sure the batter was crunchy and that the vinegar was just acidic enough.

Pupils used titration, gravimetric and chromatography skills to solve a series of problems whilst working as accurately as possible. Their results will be entered into the National Competition and we await to see how they have done. The event was well received by the students in what was a thorough and engrossing test of their practical abilities.
