On Friday 4 October 2019, all boys in Year 7 joined the History Department on a guided tour of the Tower of London. They went around the UNESCO World Heritage Site in their House groups. Each group took part in a workshop conducted by the Historic Royal Palace Education team on either the Norman Tower or Richard III and the Princes in the Tower.
Alexander in 7 Joblings reports: “I enjoyed going to the Tower of London on Field Day. I learned a lot about medieval armour, weapons and battle strategies. We learned a great deal about how medieval castles were built and how the Normans used them. I was surprised to learn that the Norman Tower was not completed in William the Conqueror’s lifetime.”
He continues to say, “The Tower was used as an arsenal and was a symbol of power. Surprisingly, the King didn’t stay there himself, instead he lived in a house near the Tower. We enjoyed seeing the Crown Jewels. We learned about the long history of the Tower of London and how it has changed over the many years it has been used as Royal Palace and Fortress by many different Monarchs. It was a fantastic trip, thank you!”
