The Keith Dawson Independent Research Project provides an opportunity for students to pursue a subject of special interest. Over five months, students research, engage with and delve into a question of their choosing before presenting their project.
To celebrate the culmination of their work, students came together for a special prize giving assembly. It showcased the impressive academic curiosity and dedication of our Year 9 cohort as they wrapped up their extensive research journeys, shining a spotlight on those who earned a distinction, or a merit with an aspect of distinction. The audience had the privilege of hearing from Mr Dawson on why research is so vital, alongside reflections from several winning students on the core skills they gained.
Project titles ranged from ‘How will advancements in artificial intelligence impact human cognitive abilities in the next few years?’ to ‘What extent is the Mediterranean diet effective in preventing cardiovascular disease?’ and ‘Were the most influential western classical composers considered the ‘pop’ artists of their day?’
Students demonstrated initiative, creativity, critical thinking and risk taking, deploying their curiosity in a wonderful range of areas that interested them; from Napoleon III to coil and air suspension systems in mountain bikes, and from the evolution of flightless birds to attitudes towards refugees in the UK.
