A team of Year 11 students has earned national recognition after reaching the final stage of the UK CanSat competition, held at the prestigious National STEM Learning Centre in York.

Team Daedalus, Dilan (11S1), Charlsantony (11H2), Arya (11C1), William (11J2) and Thushanth (11H2) represented the school among the country’s top young engineering talents. Their place in the Finals followed success in a highly competitive national selection process earlier this year, which saw only a handful of teams advance from approximately 320 entries nationwide.

At the Finals, Team Daedalus delivered a polished and compelling presentation of their CanSat project to a panel of expert judges. Speaking with clarity, technical understanding, the students expertly explained the design, performance of their satellite system. Judges were particularly impressed by the team’s ability to respond thoughtfully to questions, demonstrating both depth of knowledge and strong teamwork.

Although the team did not secure an overall win, they earned the Engineering Design Trust Industrial Cadets Gold Award as a result of reaching the National Finals, which also places them firmly among the top eight CanSat teams in the UK. This is an industry-recognised benchmark for high-quality engineering project work and a significant milestone in a competition known for its rigorous standards and high level of participation.

Throughout the event, Team Daedalus represented us with distinction, showcasing not only technical skill but also professionalism and collaboration. Their success reflects our growing strength in STEM education and student-led innovation.

This year marks continued progress for our CanSat programme, with five teams participating and two advancing to the regional launch stage in March. The increasing involvement highlights a rising enthusiasm for engineering and space-related projects among students.

As CanSat continues to expand at Habs, experiences such as those gained by Team Daedalus are expected to inspire future cohorts to aim for similar success on the national stage.
