The Year 10 and 12 groups from the Outdoor and Leadership program participated in the annual OL Brecon Beacons Field Day Trip this weekend. We had 33 students from Year 10, 23 students in Year 12 and seven members of staff attend the trip.
The Year 10s were on the trip for the first time and experienced the best of the activities that the Brecons has to offer! They spent one day hiking up the various peaks in the area, building up to climbing Pen Y Fan, the highest peak. They spent the other day doing gorge scrambling and caving, which they all found pushed them well outside of their comfort zones. All students participated in the activities, and the centre staff commented that while many found the activities challenging, they all showed perseverance and good team work in completing them all successfully.
The Year 12s were travelling for the second time so the centre put on new activities for them. They did a longer, more challenging gorge scramble on the first day followed by an afternoon of climbing on natural rock. On the second day they spent the morning completing a rafted canoe orienteering challenge and then in the afternoon took part in archery, crate stacking and zip lining.
The outstanding behaviour and positive attitude of the Year 12 group was a particular highlight for me, particularly as they had to set up tents in the dark on the first evening when we arrived, and then camp in cold conditions while the Year 10s were in a bunkhouse, all while participating in exciting but challenging activities.
The trip would not have happened, or been the success it was, without the enthusiasm, energy and positivity of the accompanying staff.
The school would like to thank Miss Von Truchsess, Mrs Hanlon, Mr Wheeler, Dr Chapman, Dr Hobbs and Mr Lunn for being such fantastic members of the team.
