On Friday 26 April 2019, The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School was delighted to learn that it had been shortlisted for a TES Award for top Mathematics team. The TES Schools Awards 2019 recognise the most outstanding individuals and institutions that the education sector has to offer. Habs teachers Tom Jones and Sam Biggerstaff have been nominated for Mathematics team of the year.

Habs Boys, which regularly tops league tables nationally and internationally, was awarded ‘The Sunday Times School of the Year 2017’ accolade and was named as one of the ‘Top 100 Cricketing Schools’ again this year by The Cricketer Magazine. The School continues to excel across the board. As recently as last year, The Programme for International Pupil Assessment (PISA) assessed Habs students and showed that the School significantly outperformed the highest scoring countries, including Singapore, Canada and Finland. The School was ranked as the globally highest performing education system in all three categories tested: Mathematics, Science and Reading. In Mathematics, Habs scored such high results that placed the School off the PISA scale. The PISA report stated that Habs boys are “well on their way to becoming the skilled knowledge workers of tomorrow.” The strength of the School and the Mathematics department is further evidenced by this impressive TES Award shortlist for the top Mathematics team in the UK.

TES editor Ann Mroz said: “It is wonderful to see such great ideas and excellent practice emerging from our schools and teachers. We had a record number of entries this year and the standard was very high, so all those shortlisted should be very proud: it’s an extraordinary achievement to be on this shortlist.”

Headmaster Gus Lock said: “Habs is delighted to be shortlisted for the TES Award in Mathematics. We pride ourselves on excellent teaching and learning, both inside and beyond the classroom. We are blessed to have the very best teachers and it is fitting that they are recognised in this way by being shortlisted for such a prestigious award.”

The winners will be revealed at the TES gala awards evening at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London on Friday 21 June 2019.
