On Tuesday 22 January, Year 9 students from both the Boys’ and Girls’ School had a very enjoyable morning being taught by well-known philosopher of religion Dr Peter Vardy.

Dr Vardy spoke first on the ethics of AI and genetic engineering, which the pupils found very interesting – they were excited to question some major issues. After this Dr Vardy gave an insightful session on the New Atheism and how plausible it is.
Our guest speaker ended by opening up the floor for a lively debate on whether it is morally permissible to genetically engineer embryos. There were lots of contributions and the motion went to a vote at the end.
Dr Vardy imparted his knowledge and provided much food for thought. Year 9 from both schools were very grateful that he came into speak. It was indeed a great morning and pupils following up with material from the conference in lessons. It was wonderful to have the Girls’ School with us and we hope to run something similar again next year.
